Ritter names new civil rights director

Gov. Bill Ritter has tapped the personnel director for the state’s highway department to serve as director of the Civil Rights Division.

Steven Chavez, 58, has represented the state on complex employment and environmental law cases, according to a news release from Ritter’s office.

He has worked as personnel director of the Colorado Department of Transportation since 2001. Before that, he worked for the state attorney general and was an enforcement attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency.

“I have always been passionate about the fair treatment of all people,” Chavez said.

The Colorado Civil Rights Division is charged with enforcing the state’s anti-discrimination laws in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodation.
