Gazebo receives school students are progressing

Despite the heat this summer, Bernalillo High School were occupied by students doing work.

It is a 40 feet by 40 feet wooden vigas pavilion with a roof of wood shingles and flagstone floor in a grassy area behind the school.

The structure was designed and built by students in the classroom Nora’s Tafoya, the project forward. The class prepares students for basic research math and English, with computers to the attention of district SER work for Progress, a national agency, students stay in school.

“Working with the architect of the school, they developed the final design. The children were encouraged to decision-making, construction, we can find a supplier,” said Tafoya, has learned in the district 27 years and most of their summer vacation to oversee the project.

“I have all day here,” she said. “But I loved every minute, see the children grow and see how they are learning.

“The children had to be done, cutting and measuring. Appris how to use tools and safety in the workplace. Appris about the attitude to respect each other as co-workers and on teamwork. ”

A $ 25000 grant by the New Mexico Youth Conservation Corps helped purchase materials and students’ content of approximately $ 5.50 per hour.

Twenty-three students worked on the project, first, but this number was geschwunden the subject.

“I am here brains,” said Maynard Garcia, 16, when he is suspended for Chipping smooth flagstones. “I have learned, like everyone here. It’s a hands-on job. Love me. I have no patience for resting inside.”

A look at the project almost finished, he said, “I feel proud, true, and I have something new to come,” if the school starts.

“I would say it is quite complete,” he said. “Slowly we are quite naturally, little by little, now I know I can ensure that the workplace.”

The class has been some intangible effects: a student “no longer wants to be in a class reorganisation measures. He wants to maths and English regular education. He wants the engineer,” said Tafoya. “He had an attitude change.

Others, she says, “construction has been found, are not what they want.”

One of them was Philip Aragon, 17

“I thought it would be fun, and I could add some money,” he said. “I discovered that this is certainly not what I want to do (future). It is difficult work.

Students work has plans for the flag of their teachers editorial in October.

This week, they put the finishing touches to the project by fixing wooden shingles at the beginning and scraping of flagstones it.

Tafoya had the idea of doing a project with their class, while teachers at a conference a few years ago.

Young came to the idea of a flag, students seeking a shade for lunch or to a classroom outdoors.

They are also a celebration of the September planning to celebrate the completed project.

As it is a community project, community members can flag, “said Tafoya.

“I thought it would be beautiful, but it’s not nice,” said Tafoya, look in the radius of coverage pine vigas of the grid method and design.

A metal ring with radiant bars possession of the bar its entry into force. It was the idea of students, “said Tafoya.

Students will make a presentation on New Mexico Youth Corps on the project. Videos were made on how it works.

And the more they want a flag for the school and perhaps also for other places in Bernalillo.
