Chavez takes over civil rights as Head of State
Growing up in west of Denver helped create the conditions for Steven Chavez the last chapter of his life.
He was recently appointed director of the Staatliche’s Civil Rights Division.
“I had a lot of experience in this environment, which taught me that people should be treated fairly and with respect,” said Chavez on the harsh environment, where he spent his years striking.
Chavez, former staff director of the Department of State Highway, was opened by Bill Ritter Dir ensure that the Office puts the state anti-discrimination directives on employment and public housing and housing for people with disabilities.
In his former position of Mr. Chavez, 58, representing the state in employment and environmental law cases - a role he says he has also assisted in the preparation of his post.
“My experience as representatives of public bodies has taught me that there is a quantity, you can do to solve problems without costly exit fees,” he said.
One of Chavez’s top concerns, the debate over illegal immigration has led many divisiveness in the state, and across the country.
“I am very concerned about the tenor of the debate on immigration and about leaks in the Community as regards matters relating to discrimination,” he said.
“I think we would have a reasoned debate. I think there are issues related to the evaluation of anti-immigrant, which must be addressed,” said Chavez.
“My hope is that people with Archbishop (Charles) Chaput and the new Consul General of Mexico, it allows us to better understand the impact of the debate on the immigration of people in our country.”
Among the challenges Chavez, the “difficult legal question whether singling out, are people without papers by the authorities for criminal prosecution of unlawful discrimination,” said Ed Kahn, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado.
Chavez said he was required to “vigorous implementation” of the state anti-discrimination laws, but it was too early in its mandate for such questions.
He said that one of its primary objectives is to the extent that its “Outreach” calendar.
“I plan to travel from state and meet as many people as I can. I see my role as human beings to speak, so they know their rights when they relate to discrimination in access housing and work, “he said.
Another priority is the opening of regional offices and, possibly, in Pueblo Grand Junction. Budget Cuts have closed the offices of several years.
Mr. Chavez said he was still too early to say if the budget and other resources to manage his department.
